Dominic Coppens is Senior Managing Associate at the law firm Sidley Austin LLP, based in Brussels (bio). He advises governments, companies, and civil society on international trade law and policy, in particular on WTO rules. He authored one of the leading treatise on WTO subsidy law (here). Dominic’s recent work focuses on the intersection between trade and sustainability, including on circular economy initiatives, international waste regulation, carbon pricing and offsetting, new international rulemaking in the area of sustainable trade, and trade-related aspects of the EU’s Green Deal. Dominic teaches at bachelor and master level on international economic law, specialized courses on WTO subsidy law, and PhD courses on trade and sustainability. He is a member of the International Law Association (ILA)’s International Committee on Sustainable Development and the Green Economy in International Trade Law and external adviser to the Forum on Trade, Environment & the SDGs (TESS). From September onwards, Dominic will be Professor of International Economic Law at Maastricht University.
